Unakite is a metamorphic rock that is usually opaque and has flecks of green, black, pink, and white. It is made up of multiple minerals, including pink orthoclase feldspar, green epidote, and colorless quartz, and is formed when hydrothermal activity alters granite. Unakite is often used as a gemstone, but it can also be used as a building stone, lapidary rough, and construction material.

Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Mountain Range in western North Carolina, and its name comes from the mountain range. It was first used in 1874.

Unakite is not a porous stone, but it can be sensitive to chemical cleaners because of its composition. It can cleave under impact, and heat can change its colors, so it's best to avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning. Instead, you can clean unakite with a soft cloth or brush, mild soap, and warm water. After cleaning, rinse it off and pat it dry with a soft cotton cloth.

Unakite is a gemstone that is said to have many metaphysical properties, including:

  • Emotional balance: Unakite is believed to help balance emotions, spirituality, and mental energies. Some say it can help people get to the root of emotional issues and lead more well-rounded lives.

  • Grounding: Unakite is said to be a stone of balance that can help ground oneself.

  • Vision: Unakite is associated with the third eye chakra and is said to be a stone of vision that can help with scrying.

  • Convalescence: Crystal healers use unakite to help people recover from illness.

  • Reproductive system: Unakite is also believed to affect the reproductive system, healthy pregnancy, and skin and hair growth.

  • Heart and lungs: Some say that wearing unakite jewelry can strengthen the heart and lungs and help balance internal bodily processes.

  • Stress reduction: Unakite jewelry is said to help reduce stress and achieve a serene state of mind. Some say that unakite pendants and rings can help people who have trouble sleeping.
