Sphalerite is a rare, zinc sulfide mineral that is also known as zinc blende, blende, blackjack, and mock lead. It's an ore of zinc that contains 67% zinc metal in its natural pure form. Sphalerite is usually black in color, but can also be yellow, orange, red, or brown when transparent. Its crystals are often triangular pyramids in shape.

The name sphalerite comes from the Greek word sphaleros, which means "treacherous". This is because darker varieties of sphalerite can be easily mistaken for galena, a valuable lead ore. Sphalerite is also fragile and not commonly used in jewelry because of its low hardness (3.5-4.0 Mohs scale) and perfect cleavage.

Sphalerite is a mineral and gem material with many powers, including healing properties, energy, and as a source of zinc:

  • Healing

Some believe sphalerite can help with the immune system, nervous system, and eyes. It may also help with infections and balance blood oxygen levels.

  • Energy

Sphalerite is sometimes used to increase energy and strength, especially after exertion. Some also consider it a stone of personal power and discernment that can help people make good decisions.

  • Zinc

Sphalerite is the primary source of zinc, which is essential for humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. The zinc in sphalerite is used to produce brass, an alloy of copper and zinc.

  • X-rays

Sphalerite can emit light without burning when activated, making it useful in X-ray equipment.
