Septarian is a semi-precious gemstone and crystal that's a combination of minerals, rock, and organic matter. It's also known as septarian agate or septarian jasper, but it's not technically either. Septarian is characterized by its cracked or partitioned look, which is also why it's sometimes called "dragonstone" or "dragon's egg geode".
Septarian nodules form when muddy sediment, organic matter, and mineral contents from sea creatures bond together on the seafloor. Over time, pressure, desiccation, and volcanic activity cause the nodules to crack and form angular cavities called septaria. Calcite then seeps into the cracks and crystallizes on top of a layer of aragonite, which is on bentonite clay. Once the oceans return to normal levels, the nodules dry and crystallize into aragonite and calcite crystals.
Septarian nodules can form in many different shapes, such as pyramids and spheres, and each nodule has a unique pattern that varies in color and complexity. Septarian can be brown, tan, black, gray, white, reddish, or golden in color, and it has a dull luster and opaque transparency.
Septarian is a fossilized stone that some believe has many metaphysical properties, including healing, protection, and communication:
Healing
Septarian is thought to be a stone of physical and metaphysical healing, taking on the healing properties of the minerals it's made of, plus some of its own.
Protection
Septarian is also considered a protective stone.
Communication
Septarian is known as a speaking stone, said to improve communication skills.
Grounding
Septarian is believed to nurture and ground the wearer, leading to feelings of happiness and understanding.
Mental clarity
Yellow septarian is said to improve intellect and mental clarity due to its symbolic yellow color and connection to the Solar Plexus Chakra.
