Serpentine rock, also known as serpentinite, is a metamorphic rock that is usually apple green to black in color and has a shiny or wax-like appearance. It can be fine-grained and compact, or it can be granular, platy, or fibrous. Serpentine rock often has light and dark colored areas and a slightly soapy feel. The rock's name comes from its resemblance to snake skin.

Serpentine rock is made up of one or more magnesium silicate minerals, including lizardite, chrysotile, and antigorite. The minerals are made of tiny sheets of silica tetrahedrons that are loosely held together, giving serpentine rock a greasy or scaly look and a slippery feel. Serpentine rock can also contain veins, some of which may be filled with chrysotile, a form of asbestos. Inhaling loose asbestos fibers can cause lung disease.

Geoscientists believe serpentine rock is the metamorphosed remains of magnesium-rich igneous rocks, like peridotite, from the earth's mantle. One theory is that peridotite underlying oceanic crustal rocks has been metamorphosed into serpentine in subduction zones, which are areas where ocean crust rocks slide underneath the edge of a continent.

Serpentine rock is found in central and northern California in the Coast Ranges, Klamath Mountains, and Sierra Nevada foothills.

Serpentine, California's state rock, is said to have many metaphysical properties, including:

  • Chakra alignment

Serpentine is believed to align chakras, particularly the crown chakra, which is associated with higher consciousness and spiritual insight. It is also said to clear clouded areas of the chakras.

  • Spiritual enlightenment

Serpentine is thought to promote spiritual enlightenment and connection to higher realms. It is also said to resonate with the energy of the divine feminine, which connects the life force with the divine.

  • Meditation

Serpentine is said to help clear thought and quiet the mind, which can facilitate meditation and deepen focus.

  • Interpersonal relationships

Serpentine is believed to have a positive influence on relationships, promoting understanding, empathy, and compassion. Some suggest placing a piece of serpentine in shared spaces or wearing it during interactions to create a supportive atmosphere.

  • Psychic abilities

Serpentine is said to stimulate the crown chakra, which can promote psychic abilities.

  • Past lives

Serpentine is said to aid in wisdom and insight into past lives.
