Banded onyx is a type of onyx that has alternating bands of color. It's made of chalcedony, a member of the quartz group, and is cryptocrystalline, meaning it's made of fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite. Onyx can come in many colors, including white, black, blue, green, red, gray, gold, and brown, and each color variation has its own unique veining pattern.
Banded onyx can be formed in a few different ways:
Iron-saturated calcite
When cold water slowly precipitates calcite that's saturated with iron that's oxidized (red) or reduced (green) crystals, it can form banded onyx. This type of banded onyx comes from a single location near the border of Pakistan and Iran. Artisans mine the solid stone blocks and then use lathes to turn them into bowls and other home accessories.
Silica-rich fluids
When silica-rich fluids precipitate and fill cavities, they can form onyx. Cobalt impurities in the fluids can give the onyx a blue color, while pure chalcedony can form white bands. Blue banded onyx can be found in many places around the world, including Brazil, China, India, Madagascar, Mexico, and the United States. It's a popular gemstone for jewelry and other decorative purposes, and some believe it has metaphysical properties like promoting balance, stability, and grounding.
Banded onyx has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, which means it can scratch calcite but calcite can't scratch it. It also has a vitreous, silky luster and an uneven, conchoidal fracture.
Striped onyx, a type of chalcedony, is said to have many metaphysical properties:
Absorbs negative energy: It's believed to absorb negative energy and then diffuse it.
Promotes harmony: It's thought to bring the mind, body, spirit, and emotions into harmony.
Engenders benevolent feelings: It's said to engender benevolent feelings and remove hostility.
