Amethyst is a violet to purple variety of the quartz mineral that can range in color from pale lavender to deep purple. It's a naturally occurring macrocrystalline variety of quartz that usually grows inside agate geodes. Amethyst is fairly hard and durable, with a hardness of 7, and can be cleaned with a steamer or ultrasonic cleaner.

Amethyst has a long history and deep symbolism. The name comes from the Koine Greek word amethystos, which is a combination of a- meaning "not" and methysko meaning "intoxicate". In ancient times, amethyst was believed to have many powers, including preventing drunkenness, warding off evil spirits, and protecting the wearer from harm. It's also been a symbol of royalty for centuries, associated with wealth, power, and luxury. Amethyst was traditionally worn by the robes and crowns of rich and powerful monarchs, and is still worn by church officials in the Anglican/Episcopal hierarchies, the Roman Catholic church, and the Church of Scotland.

Amethyst is also revered for its unique healing energy and metaphysical powers. It's believed to have many healing properties, including:

  • Regenerating cells

  • Promoting restful sleep

  • Supporting hormonal balance

  • Balancing the metabolism and endocrine system

  • Reducing stress and tension

  • Removing negative energies

  • Helping with migraines and other head disorders

  • Helping with anxiety and depression

  • Clearing the mind

  • Washing away toxic thinking

Amethyst is often used in jewelry, and lower grades of material can be cabbed, carved, and made into beads and other ornamental objects. Brazil, Uruguay, and Zambia are some of the largest global producers of amethyst.

Amethyst, a semi-precious purple quartz gemstone, is said to have many metaphysical properties, including:

  • Spiritual

Amethyst is said to open the crown and third eye chakras, which can help with spiritual growth, inner peace, and protection from negative energies. It can also enhance psychic abilities, intuition, and feelings of connection to the universe.

  • Mental

Amethyst can help with clear thinking, alleviating fears and worries, and trusting intuition. It can also help increase focus by improving cognitive and decision-making abilities.

  • Physical

Amethyst is said to help with headaches and tension, boost the immune system, and promote restful sleep. It can also help with hormonal balance and metabolism and endocrine system balance.

  • Other

Amethyst is said to help prevent drunkenness, dispel evil thoughts, and quicken intelligence. It can also create a sense of tranquility and absorb negative energy when placed in a home.

Some ways to use amethyst for healing include:

  • Placing it near your bed at night to help you sleep

  • Holding it in your hand while meditating

  • Putting it on your desk to create a peaceful, tension-free space

  • Wearing it as jewelry or keeping it in your pocket to fight negativity

However, these claims are scientifically unproven. According to astrology, people who are prone to violence should not wear amethyst because the stone's powerful energy can amplify these tendencies.
